19-year old London singer, songwriter and musician Althea and her debut EP See My Vision is definitely something to lookout for. Previous tracks ‘Out of Time, ‘Ride,’ and ‘Telling Stories’ have been impressing critics worldwide. Althea’s promising initial success is ready to step out to the public with the release of her first completed project, which doesn’t disappoint.
Althea’s creative vision as an artist showcases her talent and style through the debut of this mixtape. With a combination of great R&B storytelling and up-tempo club songs, her artistic abilities are considered unlimited. ‘Ride,’ the leading song off the EP, seems to be the strongest single with its catchy dance and R&B feel. There is definite potential to make this song a radio/club hit.
Althea comes highly recommended if you like honest and forward thinking R&B, and artists such as Kehlani, Bryson Tiller and Jhene Aiko. Her 7-track debut project builds on her previously released singles ‘Out Of Time’, ‘Ride’ and Telling Stories’ which have taken a life of their own online, and have been streamed over 30,000 times on Soundcloud in the past four months.
‘London Interlude,’ a new song off the EP, pays homage to her hometown with the title, leaving small intimate pieces for fans to learn about. Most of the songs involve the hard reality of relationships, break-ups, and her honest feelings about them. Althea’s ability to lyrically be so relatable to her young audience displays the maturity of her as a songwriter. ‘What’s Up?’ does just that, her repeatedly asking “What’s up with you to me? Why are you so different?” The way she goes about telling her story, emotionally connecting so well, differs from mainstream tracks.
The EP was produced and co-written with fellow upcoming musician and producer Dayo, and it easily stands as one of the best independent UK projects we’ve heard so far this year, with Althea making for an exciting addition to British R&B in 2016, with her captivating vocals, relatable storytelling skills and artistic versatility. The title See My Vision needs no explanation; this debut is here to show us her vision, what she’s capable of.
